Assisting with all stages of funeral arrangements in Bradford
What to do when a loved one passes away
When you lose a loved one, in your grief or shock it can be hard to know what first steps you must take. When you’re ready, funeral arrangements must be made. At Joseph A Hey & Son, we have decades of experience in helping grieving families and individuals in Bradford and across West Yorkshire plan funerals for lost loved ones. We can guide you through the first stages of funeral arrangements with sensitivity and professionalism.
If the death occurs at home, contact your doctor as soon as possible so they can issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death so the death can be registered. Contact the police if the death is violent, accidental or there are suspicious circumstances and the cause is not known for certain. If the police are called in, do not touch or remove anything in the room. You can contact a funeral director for advice on 01274 571 021. Don’t confirm the details of a funeral until you know that the death does not need to be reported to the coroner, as this may delay the date. It’s also important to ascertain whether the deceased left a will, as this may contain instructions on their funeral wishes or information about prepaid arrangements.

People generally opt for a prepaid funeral to relieve a financial burden from their loved ones at the time of mourning, but also to protect the costs from inflation. It’s important to check whether any prior agreement includes a contribution towards disbursements (third party fees) that must be paid by Joseph A Hey & Son or any funeral director. Disbursements can include the cremation or burial fee, doctor’s fees, and flowers.
We can help relieve your financial burden
We can help with the costs of funerals if certain criteria are met. Financial help towards a funeral may be possible if you or your partner planned it in advance and if the deceased had their main home if the UK. Additionally, you must either:
- Be a beneficiary of some sort of benefits or entitlements, including Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, Working Tax Credit (which includes a disability or severe disability element), or Child Tax Credit.
- Live with a council tax payer who gets a Second Adult Rebate because you are on Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, or have a low income.
